Argument 115
The recommendation in this argument is that we should provide breakfasts for all students before each school day. Author mentions that eating breakfast before school plays a role in reducing student absenteeism and tardiness. An d author put forward a recent six-month study as example. This argument may seen to be somewhat convincing at first glance, but a close examination tell us the reason is implicit casual relation and false analogy. The primarily mistake is the implicit casual relation. Admittedly, children on the breakfast plan were less likely than other children to be absent from or late for school. However, it can’t be concluded that breakfast can redu ce the absenteeism. Other aspects such as nature of children, teachers’ ins truction are also significant. Another error is false analogy. Self-evidently, the theory is based on the s tudy. The age the study covered is five to twelve while the conclusion conce rns the elementary and secondary schools. It comes light that a five-year-ol d boy is before school age and secondary schools include the students who ag e from 12 to 14. Even if 100 students who are from elementary and secondary schools conquer the absenteeism by eating breakfast, not all the students ca n benefit from breakfast. Thirdly, the logical reasoning also has some defects. It can’t be seen “cl early ” that breakfast has anything to do with students’ tardiness. The au thor doesn’t state any reason for it. If breakfast is helpful to tardiness, we can raise the diet therapy to a higher level: not only physically subser vience, but mentally useful. In sum, there is no short cut of resolving the absenteeism. Only by teachers ’ conduction and students’ consciousness could students be kept from absen teeism.
